The Red Team
The Red Team plays a unique role as part of a cybersecurity risk management program. Red Team members are the ‘ethical hackers’ of the organization. They are tasked with deeply understanding how actual attackers are attacking systems using the most up-to-date attack vectors. These ethical hackers will continuously perform sanctioned penetration tests against their own networks, systems and employees to test their own defenses. The idea is to compromise your own environment before the attackers do and to take these lessons learned and pass them on to their respective SOC and Blue Teams to incorporate into updated threat identification and incident response procedures. Penetration testing involves the use of tools and techniques including social engineering, web application exploits, system takeover, planting backdoors and exfiltrating data.
